The Trocadero's History

Trocadero Square, inevitable spot of Paris, is not only a mythical place but also a square full of history.

Indeed, built in 1869 during the reign of the 2nd empire under the name of King of Romes Square and taking its actual name of Trocadéro Square in 1877 according to the battle name in Spain.

But how can we talk about Trocadero Square without mentionning its palace? Located between The Field of Mars and the Eiffel Tower, this impressive building overlooks the Seine and goes along the Hill of Chaillot, symbol of an era with an eclectic style from the end of the thirties. It was first built under the name of Trocadero Palace in 1878 on the occasion of the Universal Exposition, and then was replaced by the actual palace, the Chaillot Palace on the occasion of the International Exposition of Arts & Technics in 1937, under the supervision of the architects (rewarded by awards of Rome), Léon Azéma, Jacques Carlu and Louis-Hippolyte Boileau. It also housed the head office of the United Nations from 1946 to 1952, and then the North Atlantic Treaty Organization from 1952 to 1959 and now receives several museums like the Museum of Man, the Museum of Marine in its west wing, the national Theater of Chaillot as well as the Cité of Architecture and Patrimoine in its east wing.

The Trocadero is also globally known for its sumptuous garden, facing the Seine, adorned by a multitude of sculptures, ponds but also by its famous Warsaw Fountain, created from scratch by the architect Roger-Henri Expert. This place is still a well appreciated place by  Parisians but also by the international public for a green stroll at the heart of the capital.
